Plans were unveiled to turn the Acme Steel Co. Chicago Coke Plant into a museum on the history and making of steel.
"An architect's plan for the Acme Steel Co. Chicago Coke Plant, unveiled for its first public viewing Tuesday evening, melds together museum education, vocational education and a splash of botany, with lunch tossed in on the side.
The plant on the city's South Side closed in 2001, and three months ago, Chicago's Steel Heritage Project made a down payment on structures at the site in hopes of creating a museum about the history of steel on property that once churned out coke, a hot-burning fuel made from coal to create the alloy."
