In defiance of the White House, the U.S. Senate approved a $295 billion highway and mass transit bill.
"The Senate overwhelmingly approved a $295 billion highway and mass transit bill this afternoon, setting up a showdown with the White House, which has called for a bill $11 billion smaller...The 89-to-11 vote reflected the desire of most of the lawmakers, regardless of party, for more road and transit dollars for their states, especially since the last big road-and-transit aid program is set to expire at the end of the month. The Republican majority leader, Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, was among those voting for the higher figure, in defiance of the White House."
