If you want to see how far planning has come in the last three or four decades, read The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City, created by the Nashville Civic Design Center with support from the city and written and edited by Christine Kreyling. This recently published book includes a history that documents the good, the bad, and the downright ugly of 20th-century planning. Nashville is one of many US cities that were substantially destroyed by highly efficient and destructive mid-century planners and engineers.
