A plan for reinvigorating the Australian city's transportation network.
The Committee for Melbourne, a private organisation that reads like a who's who for Australian businesses, has published a plan for revitalising that city's transport system, but it only suggests improvements in roads, not public transport."The report predicts that if drastic action is not taken, Melbourne will lose its prized status as a national transport hub, pointing out that a ring road around Sydney will be completed within four years, encouraging freight and business investment. Melbourne's ring road has a large gap between Greensborough and the new tollway, EastLink.""This looks a lot like a transport plan crafted by the roads lobby," Public Transport Users Association spokesman Chris Loader said.Environment Victoria spokeswoman Sarah Hudson said it was the wrong response to an urgent problem. "We strongly disagree with the committee's proposal to expand road networks, particularly when our public transport system is screaming out for drastic improvements," she said.
