"On Sunday, the mayor, NYC2012 officials and team owners announced that the Mets will build a new, privately funded stadium on a parking lot at Shea Stadium, with $180 million in city and state funding for infrastructure improvements. The new stadium is to be ready for the 2009 season; if the city is awarded the Olympics, the city and state will spend another $100 million to increase its seating capacity from 45,000 to 80,000.

...With a construction site on city-owned land, public-funding agreements in place and a motivated developer who will be able to proceed regardless of an IOC nod to New York City, the new stadium is a virtual shoo-in."
