Britain Driving Ahead With Road Pricing

Charging drivers for the use of roads may be in the only way to slow the growth of urban traffic congestion.

According to Britain's Transport Secretary Alistair Darling, either gridlock will make British roads impassable in 20 to 30 years, or UK drivers will be paying for the privilege of driving their cars. As recently as 2002, few government officials were suggesting that road-pricing schemes were the only practical way to deal with problems related to congestion, pollution and parking. Following the success of London's congestion charge, politicians of all orientations are now accepting the need for road pricing, but the public has yet to be convinced.
