A city ranked first or last in a given category does not necessarily mean the city is perfectly pristine or dangerously filthy.

Readers Digest conducts its own analysis of "each of the 50 largest cities on air quality, water quality, industrial pollution (toxics), Superfund sites, and sanitation. Rather than just the cities themselves, [Reader's Digest] looked at metropolitan areas, which include surrounding counties and suburbs."

The top five cleanest cities:

  • 1. Portland, Oregon
  • 2. San Jose, California
  • 3. Buffalo, New York
  • 4. Columbus, Ohio
  • 5. San Francisco
