The Sierra Nevada population is expected to skyrocket. Local leaders should work to prevent new development from becoming sprawl, warns a report by a coalition of conservation groups.
"The Sierra Nevada Alliance report (www.sierranevadaalliance.org) says the population of 13 California counties that make up the core of the region will increase by 49 percent from 2000 to 2020. The report, titled Planning for the Future, also predicts the Sierra Nevada's population will triple in size between 1990 and 2040.
