Conservation Groups Eye Potential Lawsuit

Debate Over Moosehead Lake development heats up.

Four Maine conservation groups launched a campaign on Tuesday to block Plum Creek Timber Co.'s proposed resort development around Moosehead Lake. A group spokesperson said that they will take their fight to the Legislature, the courts and even Maine voters, if necessary.

Despite this announcement, Jim Lehner, Plum Creek's general manager for the Northeast, stated that individual Mainers around the company's land support the proposal."The more we move forward on this, the more we find out we have a lot of supporters out there," he said. "They see the benefits of planning out what is actually going to occur in their area." Like the recent Two Tribes Resort casino proposal, Plum Creek's Moosehead Lake project is shaping up to be another major political battle over land use in the State of Maine.
