Study Finds Parking Availability Encourages Driving

Study recommends imposing maximum parking limits, not minimum.

"Fewer people in San Francisco would drive if they didn't have parking available, according to a San Francisco State University study...

The authors recommend that San Francisco impose parking maximums, instead of minimums, at new residential developments, especially those in dense, transit-rich areas such as downtown and South of Market. New parking should be built underground, they added, as it would be more limited, expensive and provide more space on the streets for other modes of transportation."
