"Statistics will show that the convention centre's recent $240-million expansion has done what was desired by bringing more conventions to town and filling more hotel rooms with deep-pocketed conventioneers. But there's one little catch: the better the Palais does, the more it costs the Quebec taxpayer. In addition to covering municipal taxes and taking care of capital costs, including the expansion that doubled the Palais's exhibition space to 200,000 square feet, Quebec also provides an operating subsidy."
