The Newest State With Majority-Minority Population

Census estimates indicate that Texas is the fourth state where minorities account for most of the population.

Texas -- joining California, New Mexico, and Hawaii -- becomes a majority-minority population state where about 50.2 percent of Texans are now minorities, a trend driven by a surging number of Latinos moving to the state. Five other states -- Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia, New York and Arizona -- aren't far behind, with about 40 percent minorities. This emerging demographic trend has policy implications on minority education and professional achievement in those majority-minority population states as well as nationwide.
