Store Size Caps Enacted For Big Box Retailers

The City of Largo, Florida is next in a growing list of cities that have enacted design restrictions and store size caps for big box stores.

The Largo City Commission will vote on a proposed ordinance regulating "big-box" stores. Under the ordinance, the maximum building footprint would be limited to 125,000 square feet, forcing retailers to build multistory stores. Other design restrictions would control building massing, scale and materials and site design. The City of Largo adopted a Strategic Plan in 2004 that promotes development of activity centers and mixed use corridors in order to achieve a more compact, walkable urban form.
