A report by the Center for Energy Efficiency and RenewableTechnologies called "Crude Reckoning: The impact of Petroleum onCalifornia's Public Health and Environment" outlines how the production, transportation and use of gasoline dirties California's air and water. It recommends that cigarette-style "biohazard" warning labels be placedon new cars, and encourages state air quality regulators to maintainZero Emission Vehicle Requirements. Oil industry representativescritique the report for mischaracterizing the oil industry, for theyhave implemented regulations and new technology to make substantialimprovements on emissions in the Bay Area. However, the Bay Area stilldoes not meet health standards for smog or soot, and over half of thepollution comes from motor vehicles or refineries, according to the BayArea Air Quality Management District.
