G. M., Air District Partner To Reduce Smog

In an unusual partnership General Motors and the South Coast Air Quality Management District will retrofit school buses, study natural gas trains and run hybrid vehicles.

Traditional adversaries General Motors and the South Coast Air Quality Management District have formed a partnership to advance 'green diesel' technology. G. M. will spent $2.5 million to retrofit 35 school buses with particulate traps, study natural-gas-burning trains and donate hybrid transit buses and vans. The effort comes as the Air Quality District is developing new rules for public fleets which could ban diesel.
