Lowering The Speeding Limit To Improve Air Quality

The government in The Netherlands has voted to reduce the speed limit on its busiest highways to help the air quality in the country.

"The issue of speed limits is steeped in political controversy. Fearing the influence of the vocal pro-car media on voters, politicians are reluctant to discuss the issue. Against this backdrop it is remarkable that the Dutch governmentâ€™s decision to reduce speed limits to 80 km/hr on four of the Netherlands' busiest stretches of motorway as of November 2005 has met with so little opposition. The move is part of a set of new measures introduced to cut traffic emissions to comply with European air quality norms."
