Venice Of The East Loosing Its Lakes To Land Sharks

To the dismay of the residents of Udaipur, India, "land sharks" have been taking over the dry beds of the city's famous lakes and developing them.

"Lakes like Pichola and Fatehsagar have been the highlight in Udaipur's status as a picture postcard destination. But in reality, the city nestled in the middle of the Aravalis is made up of 42 small lakes and ponds that form a unique lake ecosystem.

However, systematic encroachment in the lakebeds has destroyed Udaipur's natural heritage.

Roop Sagar, one of Udaipur's less famous lakes is one such example. Recently, the dry lakebed was cut up into small plots making way for a residential colony."
