The first segment of an 18-mile multi-use trail opens in Benton, Maine.

"Peter Garrett [opened] the Rotary Centennial Trail, the first segment of an 18-mile, $6.5 million trail system planned along the Messalonskee Stream and Kennebec River. Garrett...said a healthy trail system gives neighbors a chance to meet one another and provides a safe place to exercise. [Garrett expects] to see measurable results in the physical health of members of the community as a result of use of the trail system. The project is projected to reach completion by 2010."
