Designers in Washington, DC are considering expanding the National Mall to make room for more monuments and museums.
With a glut of memorials, monuments and museums waiting to be built, and other champions for other causes in the wings, a growing number of architects and designers want to rethink the Mall itself, reconfiguring and expanding the space the way a Senate commission did 100 years ago when the Lincoln Memorial was built on what had been swampland. The plans propose to expand the Mall into East Potomac Park, bringing marinas, water taxis, shopping, restaurants, museums, landmark bridges and a new Supreme Court building to the Potomac River’s edge.
