Southern California Housing Goals Disputed

State, local officials differ as housing goals for 2005 are decided.

The Southern California Association of Governments will meet today to reviewtheir appeal committee's recommendation to reduce the housing goals set by thestate. The committe would shave 67,000 housing units from the state's targetof 504,000 units for SCAG's six-county region by 2005. While area citiesdispute the goals over issues such as excess growth, affordable housing glut ordifficulty in placing affordable housing as land values soar, the state haswarned that the cuts will not be approved without some compromise.
