U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to designate 5.4 million acres as critical habitat for the threatened California red-legged frog will affect 31 of California's 58 counties.The threatened red-legged frog was the focus of Mark Twain's short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." "In December a judge ordered Fish and Wildlife to establish critical habitat bythe end of this year. The case is one of several in which environmental groupshave successfully argued that a species requires such habitat under theEndangered Species Act.""
