The League of California Cities has adopted 10 principles for smart growth.

These ten smart growth principles are the result of a lengthy discussion within the Leagues policy committee process that began in spring 1999, when a 15-member Smart Growth Subcommittee was established in response to increased public discussion and debate about existing patterns of land use.
