Groundwater Reuse Reduces Need For Imports

In Southern California, Ventura County has begun a Groundwater Enhancement and Treatment Program to increase its supply of local, affordable water.

"Construction will start this summer in Oxnard on a desalination facility after the City Council agreed this week to issue $60 million worth of bonds to finance the project and other water-treatment improvements."

"The city's Groundwater Recovery Enhancement and Treatment program is expected to prevent water shortages as the city grows. Oxnard is running out of affordable water and depends on imports from outside sources for more than half its supply.

Without the planned facilities, the city would have to buy more water from Northern California, driving up customer rates."
