Caltrans FasTrak project for installing electronic toll machines on Bay Area bridges was signed in late 1993 with an estimated cost of $35.9 million. Now Caltrans estimates this decade-long FasTrak project will cost $76.6 million -- more than twice the orginal cost."Clearly, the FasTrak project, once designed to make the Bay Area a national leader in traffic-control technology, fell into a bureaucratic quagmire since the legislature approved it in 1990. Now toll roads from Maine to Florida, and in many foreign countries, offer discounted electronic tolls that ease commuter congestion and air pollution."
