At a day long conference on housing and urban policy sponsoredby the UC-Berkeley Haas School of Business, a panel of experts onhousing reform addressed California housing needs and issues. Keynotespeaker state Treasurer Philip Angelides emphasized the importance ofengaging the private sector in order to create change, and the need tochange land use and state investments to influence housing solutions.Santa Clara County supervisor and chairman of the regional MetropolitanTransportation Commission recommended creating urban villages aroundtransit centers, and for redevelopment agencies to shift their focusfrom jobs to affordable housing. Other experts touched upon overlystrict environmental policies and the need for high-density zoning asstatewide housing issues.
