While the Beijing-Shanghai line has long been scraped, plans for a line from Shanghai to Hangzhou are still in play.
After reports in early June that negotiations between Siemens and the Chinese government involving the extension of the world's first commercially operating Maglev train had broken down, the German company has now indicated that negotiations are continuing and that it remains optimistic that an agreement will be reached.
Plans call for the existing 30km line to be extended by 160 km (100 miles) to the city of Hangzhou, including a stop at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 site.
The current line, which connects the Pudong New Area with the international airport on the outskirts of Shanghai, has been plague by low ridership.
