The Los Angeles Times sets up a Goldfish cam and two goldfish -- Little Antonio and Little Ed -- named after the mayor and a city councilman) to see if fish can live in a tank filled with water from the Los Angeles River.
"The experiment: Could a pair of goldfish survive in the L.A. River?
A Times reporter sought to find out. Meet Little Ed, who is enjoying the river water in his home in the latimes.com newsroom. His tankmate, Little Antonio, died 111 days after he arrived.
...The idea of this extremely amateurish experiment was to determine how clean or dirty the river is as Los Angeles officials push a long-awaited plan to restore the city's namesake waterway and make it actually appear like a, well, river.
...The fish were named Little Ed and Little Antonio after a pair of the city's officials and appeared in a story about the river in Tuesday's paper. Shortly thereafter, the paper's web staff borrowed the fish as part of their own little experiment involving a webcam and this website."
