A pilot project in Dana Point of Orange County will installfilters on public storm drains in efforts to keep trash and motor oilout of the ocean. City Manager John Bahorski implemented the filters aspart of a larger plan to control runoff, using one type of filter toremove debris, and another containing absorbent material that blocksheavy metals, gasoline and oil products. The effectiveness of the systemwill be measured by how much pollutant material is gathered in thefilters and what types of pollutants are in the runoff. While the cityhas yet to fine-tune how much the program will cost, the staff reportrecommends $84,000 a year.
