The ills that affect our cities can be cured with more sustainable urban planning, says one Australian public health practitioner.
Professor Anthony Capon, a public health physician and visiting fellow at the Australian National University says that urban planning for health should be a major priority in Australian cities where more than 90 percent of Australians live.
"The health and well-being of urban residents should be viewed as a central outcome of urban development...."
"From the 1970s, we saw the emergence of large, stand-alone shopping centres which drew shopping and services away from residential areas and concentrated them in regional areas. The areas of Sydney that developed after cars and...large shopping centres...lack mass transit, local shopping outlets and other services."
