A pilot program in the San Francisco Bay Area will allow some bus riders to use wireless technology to browse the Internet, giving some commuters a head up on their morning email.
AC Transit, the transit authority for western Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, has announced a plan to bring free Wi-Fi Internet service to some of its buses as a means of attracting riders.
"The agency plans to provide Wi-Fi access on routes across the Bay that link the East Bay to San Francisco and the Peninsula. Testing is scheduled to begin this week, and service could begin this fall.
Wireless service is available on public buses in Riverside, Seattle, Cincinnati and elsewhere, but it is still a rarity on public transit.
The program will be funded with $340,000 in California transportation funds."
