Scotland calls on Andres Duany and his firm to develop a housing plan for Inverness, which is facing rapid population growth. Duany plans to employ the charrette to hear the voice of the Scottish people, who have been engulfed in sprawl for decades.
Duany and his firm DPZ have been chosen by Scottish authorities to develop a plan for meeting the housing need posed by a fast-paced population growth rate in Inverness. The New Urbanist architect looks to bring more housing to Scotland without the sprawl that typically accompanies. Sprawl is widespread in Scotland, and while it has worked in providing housing, it has left many Inverness residents seeking more.
"What, then, would make good housing for an Inverness development?"
" 'I have a personal opinion about that, but that is not really important now. What I need is more input about what people think about their heritage,' Duany said."
Duany plans to utilize the charrette process to gather community input and support for a plan he hopes will be representative of the people of Inverness.
The charrette began September 5 and will culminate with a plan presentation at a public meeting September 14.
