Designed to allow transit users the freedom of car-rentals-by-the-hour, Flexcars are now available throughout central Atlanta. But will anybody really use them?
Those who live and work in downtown or Midtown Atlanta can now pay to hop in a Flexcar, "an hourly rental car service that will be available at dozens of locations across the city."
"The service, set to launch Sept. 22, is geared for people who take a bus, train or carpool to work but sometimes need a car during the day to run errands, attend a meeting or go to the doctor. The cost is about $9 an hour, plus a $40 annual membership fee and a one-time application fee of $35."
"Seattle-based Flexcar has expanded slowly during its seven years, primarily sticking to cities seen as progressive on transit issues, such as San Francisco; Portland, Ore.; Washington, D.C., and Chicago."
"The big question: Will a service designed for transit riders and carless urban dwellers make it in sprawling, car-loving Atlanta?"
