New York City officials release a public health report on bicycle safety and announce a major expansion of New York City's bicycle network.
This morning in Central Park, New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden, Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and NYPD Chief of Transportation Michael Scagnelli announced a series of unprecedented infrastructure improvements for New York City's bicycle network. The press conference also included the release of a new public health study, "Bicyclist Fatalities and Serious Injuries in New York City 1996-2005," examining factors that contributed to the deaths of 225 bicyclists during the past decade and the serious injuries of 3,462 bicyclists between 1996 and 2003. "The ambitious target we've set for the next three years will complete the backbone of the City's planned bicycle network," said Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall.
