The new Thai military junta is freezing big box stores expansion programs in an effort to protect the remaining small stores.

"When the Thai military decided to take control of their government last week, there was already another uprising of sorts -- this time on the economic front -- that was constantly in the news in Bangkok. Like the political uprising, this one was also directed at a big figure whose name starts with "T."

Tesco, the UK retail chain whose Lotus stores have been sprouting all over Bangkok and beyond, has been the object of protest particularly from small Thai retailers fearful for their livelihoods...over half of small groceries have closed in Thailand over the past 5 years as big box stores have increased their presence.

Recent reports have it that Tesco has backed down and suspended plans of opening new Lotus outlets in Thailand, thus appeasing this particular Thai uprising for now."
