A new Brookings Institution report finds Georgia and Atlanta to be among the top refugee resettlement centers in the United States.
"Between 1983 and 2004, more than 40,000 refugees resettled in metro Atlanta, making it ninth among major American cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul."
"Georgia ranked 10th among states for number of refugees resettled during that time period -- 43,068. More than 2 million refugees have resettled in the United States since passage of the Refugee Act of 1980."
"The report identifies Atlanta as an 'emerging gateway' for refugees compared to some of the cities at the top of the list that have long-established immigrant communities."
"In addition to growing immigrant communities, metro Atlanta offers many support services for newcomers, including state or regional offices of most of the nation's resettlement organizations."
