Sewage A Growing Threat To Oceans

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reports that increasing levels of sewage in the world's oceans are a major cause of coastal destruction, and pose a serious threat to human health.

The pollution -- linked to rising coastal populations, overuse of marine resources, inadequate treatment infrastructure and poor waste handling facilities -- is putting at risk marine life and habitats, human health, as well as livelihoods from fisheries to tourism. This especially bears true in many developing countries. The UNEP report also highlights progress made in reducing global oil and chemicals pollution in the past two decades but indicates worsening of other problems.
