U.K. Waterfront Seeks International Acclaim

In a trend being seen all over the world, planners are looking to the waterfront in Plymouth, England, for redevelopment as a site worthy of international acclaim.

Architect David Mackay has been commissioned to redesign the Southern English city of Plymouth's waterfront area. Like many other coastal cities in the world, the waterfront is seen as the city's jewel. However, many -- including Mackay -- feel that Plymouth's jewel has been ignored for far too long. His plans include revitalizing the commercial district, infusing residential complexes and adding a transit hub.

"The designs will continue to be used as a vision for local planning policy until 2021, and ideas tested in the market to decide which are deliverable projects."

"Peter Ford, of the Plymouth Design Panel that advises the council on planning, said the Mackay vision provided a general framework for action but the city would need to continue to respond to change."
