Philadelphia Launches Riverfront Planning Process

The city's mayor invites the University of Pennsylvania to work with City Planning Commission to facilitate public planning process for the Delaware River waterfront.

"Yesterday, [Philadelphia Mayor] Street signed an executive order to create a master plan for the 'Central Delaware River"' that would end the project-by-project approach of building tall condominiums and giant box stores that invite traffic and pedestrian congestion.

Street hopes to form a public-private partnership with Penn Praxis, a nonprofit consulting arm of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design, and establish a 45-plus-member advisory group that includes representatives of about 15 community organizations."

The planning process is expected to include city-wide and neighborhood public forums, expert sessions and use of online collaborative tools to develop vision for waterfront.
