Virginia To Discuss Increasing Bike And Pedestrian Network

The Virginia Department of Transportation is looking to change its rules on creating new bicycle and pedestrian lanes to increase the state's walk- and bike-ability.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a series of public meetings in Southwest Virginia to introduce and discuss its Bicycle and Pedestrian program.

"The new policy is meant to give walking and cycling the same consideration as motorized transportation in the planning, design, construction and operation of Virginia's transportation network."

"VDOT formerly considered bike and pedestrian lanes only if counties or cities requested them. Under its new policy, VDOT will consider paving road shoulders, widening paved areas or adding bike and pedestrian lanes anytime it repaves or improves a road."
