An urban planning professor in Australia has joined a push to make the country's major cities more child-friendly.

"Griffith University's director of urban research Professor Brendan Gleeson said the needs of children are being forgotten as living in multi-storey units becomes the trend."

As land becomes more scarce in Australian cities like Sydney, children have fewer places to recreate, keeping most indoors.

"'These buildings are being built without thinking about children. Sydney is fast becoming the most consolidated city in Australia - the first city to have more people living in flats than houses.'"
