Atlanta Suffering From Stalled Transportation Projects

With Metro Atlanta mired in gridlock, a report by the regional planning agency detailed hundreds of transportation projects that were delayed or dropped entirely in 2006.

"Fewer than half of the metro region's transportation project phases that were supposed to get under way this year actually did, according to 'Breaking Ground,' a report released Friday by the Atlanta Regional Commission. It's the lowest percentage for any year since ARC started counting in 2003."

"All types of projects were delayed, with both roads and transit showing progress less than half the time. But bicycle and pedestrian projects suffered far more than other types, with 73 percent of such projects getting delayed and 5 percent getting dropped altogether."

"Two dozen sponsors, most of them small or midsized cities with just one or a handful of projects, had all their projects put on the delay list."
