U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo awarded more than $30 million in grants that will help families, the elderly and disabled in public housing be more self-sufficient.
The grants are being awarded to either public housing authorities and resident organizations or non-profit organizations acting on behalf of residents by HUD's Resident Opportunities Self Sufficiency -- or ROSS -- program.Activities funded for families include: providing job and business development training; developing methods to link residents to jobs with specific employers in specified fields; creating credit unions; and providing support services such as child care, transportation, and family counseling. For the elderly and persons with disabilities the funded activities include: providing personal assistance with daily activities; providing transportation to medical appointments, shopping, etc.; establishing health and wellness programs in the community; and implementing physical improvements to provide space for support services.
