The University of Minnesota has announced plans to make use of 7,800 acres of open land by creating a utopian community laboratory, with housing for 20,000-30,000 people and an integration of agriculture, commercial space, public transit and open space.
The utopian community plan was presented to university's governing board of regents, though no action was taken on the proposal. The plan includes the use of the most up-to-date technology, such as non-polluting and renewable energy sources, and other environmentally friendly materials and methods.
"Such a community would take 25 to 30 years to develop, Bruininks said. He characterized the plan as a way to further the education mission of the university and create an unparalleled opportunity: to construct a prototype living space designed for the benefit of humankind."
"'I think people will look at this in 30 to 40 years and say this is the most important decision that the university has made,' Regent David Metzen said."
