The current taxi system in New York is dysfunctional and needs a change. Here's one idea to change it through simple better street design.
A post on Streetsblog suggests that the city's Taxi & Limousine Commission should take a look at the Design Trust's recently released "Designing the Taxi," which offers some good ideas for reworking the system.
Specially, the report outlines a model for taxi stands that featured illuminated signs to flag down drivers -- which might help stop drivers from cruising the streets and stopping in lanes of traffic or bike lanes.
"All it would take to have a safer, more convenient, high class taxi pick-up and drop-off system is giving up a few dozen free or metered parking spaces per neighborhood, which may be a nice side benefit in that it would reduce the incentive to drive to that area and take mass transit or walk instead."
