Pedestrian Safety Is The Focus In Seattle

After several recent fatalities, including the death of a city council deputy, local officials have launched a citywide pedestrian safety initiative.

"Mayor Greg Nickels and police Chief Gil Kerlikowske on Wednesday announced a citywide emphasis on pedestrian safety and stepped-up traffic enforcement after one person was killed and two were hurt while crossing city intersections over a two-day period."

Much of the effort will focus on cracking down on motorists who speed or ignore "other laws at intersections. Officers also will be stopping jaywalkers and pedestrians who cross against traffic lights."

"City officials also plan to add bulb-outs, or small, rounded extensions of sidewalks at intersections that make it easier for drivers to see pedestrians and allow pedestrians to cross the street faster..."
