A casino proposal shoots the Civil War battlefield to the top of the list of Pennsylvania's endangered historic places.

A new casino with $200 million slots abutting a Civil War battlefield couldn't be more inappropriate, according to Preservation Pennsylvania. The battlefield is No. 1 on the statewide preservation group's list of most endangered historic sites. Opponents of the casino assert that its presence would deface the historic landscape of the national military park that attracts 2 million visitors each year. Casino advocates point out that it will simply build on other recent developments nearby, which include a new hotel, convention center and movie theater complex called Gateway Gettysburg and a Wal-Mart.
