Honolulu Transit Routes Debated

In Oahu, lawmakers are having trouble agreeing on the best path for a proposed light rail line. The Honolulu mayor wants a different path than that approved by the city council. But it is not even certain if the proposed line will be rail or bus.

The mayor and city council in Honolulu are grappling over a transit plan to link the city to various points on the island of Oahu. Both sides of the disagreement want different connecting points. Depending on the choice of the new line's path, the form of transit may be either rail or bus.

"The mayor said several major housing and commercial developments are planned along the route, including plans by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, DR Horton, the University of Hawaii's West Oahu campus and the Salvation Army's Kroc Community Center."

"The committee also supported not specifying 'rail' as a choice, but instead designating a more general 'fixed guideway' option, which leaves possibility of buses or trains being used on an elevated structure dedicated to mass transit."
