Built in 1929, the historic Chapman Park Market on Sixth Street, is experiencing a resurgence, drawing a new generation of Korean Americans.
The L.A. Conservancy says that this renewal is a good lesson in historic preservation for the rest of the city. The popularity of Chapman Plaza as a meeting place for young Korean Americans was what was envisioned during a 1980s $11 million renovation. It has finally happened. Four coffee houses, a sushi bar, a billiard hall, a record store, flower shop, bakery, clothing store and a hair salon will soon be joined by another restaurant.
