Newly announced plans by the government to create a Canadian National Trust dismays leaders of the Canadian Heritage Foundation, who wonder if they are being replaced over political differences.
Canada's ruling Conservatives have allocated $CA million in seed money over the next two years for the establishment of a Canadian National Trust, to be modelled after the British and Australian bodies.
The new body will protect buildings, lands and national treasures and will function as an non-profit NGO.
It's not immediately apparent how the new body will work with the Heritage Canada Foundation formed by an earlier Liberal government.
Canada's Auditor General has recently warned that Canada remains the only G8 country without a statutory system of heritage protection for government buildings.
