Does The Tortoise Lose At Ft. Irwin?

The US Army will expand its training operations, adding more than 200 square miles to Ft. Irwin. Environmentalists say this will kill the tortoises.

Ft. Irwin is between Barstow and Death Valley National Park. Expansion has been planned since the mid-1980s. The desert tortoise has blocked the plan. A pact has been made between the Interior and Army to set aside 10 square kilometers as habitat.Opponents say that this is not enough land. A death knell has been sounded for the tortoise.
